Accident insurance

Who hasn’t had an accident or been hospitalised due to illness.

Accident insurance protects you from these situations. This type of insurance is very common among the self-employed who are looking to supplement their time off work. However, personal accident insurance is more than just insurance for the self-employed, as it can cover and supplement the income of any worker, whether self-employed or employed.

Why take out accident insurance?

For coverage: It includes a range of services that adapt to all people, regardless of their age. It is a very ‘usable’ insurance.

For protection: With a small investment, we can ensure that a sick leave will not affect our family’s financial situation, allowing us to maintain our standard of living.

Price: Accident insurance is cheaper than life insurance if we take into account the amount of extra coverage it offers.

In some cases, it may be the only option, as it can be taken out for people who, due to their age or characteristics, would be excluded from similar insurance policies.

What does accident insurance cover?

As a general rule, an accident insurance policy provides compensation in the event of death or permanent disability, as well as a daily compensation for temporary disability. This can be supplemented by compensation for a hospital stay.

Apart from these basic covers, a good accident insurance policy can be complemented with travel assistance guarantees, benefits for illness or hospitalisation after illness, medical assistance, etc.

These are insurances that in general cover the damages caused by an illness or an accident in the insured person and some extra coverage such as assistance, compensating with a capital sum or with a daily payment.

In most cases, it is not mandatory. However, in some sectors, such as construction, it may be compulsory to take out collective agreement accident insurance.
If you are self-employed, you can save tax. You can deduct the cost of accident insurance from your personal income tax return up to a maximum of 500 euros, if you pay direct contributions, provided that you are obliged to take it out.
Choosing the right cover depends on your personal situation. If you have family, it may be a good idea to increase the death and disability benefits in order to leave your family in a good financial position. In the case of self-employed persons without family responsibilities, it may be a good idea to increase the daily indemnity for hospitalisation or illness more than the death benefit. It is best to discuss the capital sums and indemnities for each service with your insurance agent on a case-by-case basis, tailoring the insurance to your needs.

It is good to know what this means, as the compensation and coverage of accident insurance can vary depending on the type of disability.

  • Invalidity or partial permanent incapacity: This affects more than 33% but is not total, it reduces the worker’s work performance but does not disable him/her for his/her profession.
  • Disability or total permanent incapacity: This condition disables the worker from exercising his/her profession, although he/she may engage in another profession.
  • Invalidity or absolute incapacity: This condition disqualifies the worker for any profession, not just his or her own.
  • Severe disability: This refers to absolute permanent disability and the loss of a limb or vital function, which requires the individual to need assistance in daily life.
