Is it compulsory to take out health insurance in order to apply for a residence permit?

The health system in Spain, although public and universal, (in any part of the country this is the case, in the Balearic Islands we have the IBsalut) is maintained thanks to the taxes of all citizens. The sustainability of this system depends to a large extent on the balance between the number of users and those who contribute to its financing. In a country with a high number of non-contributing foreign residents, maintaining the public system can be a challenge.

For this reason, in order to obtain a residence permit, it is compulsory to take out private health insurance. This insurance must have a minimum duration of one year, include full health care, hospitalization, repatriation, and must be paid annually. In addition, it must not have co-payments or waiting periods. At Futurseguros, we offer the possibility of taking out this type of insurance.

In the case of obtaining the NIE (Foreigner Identification Number), the same documentation may be required, although this requirement may vary.

It is important to note that health insurance is compulsory in the following cases:

  • Study Visas
  • Non-Profit Residence
  • European Union citizens and their family members
  • Family Reunification
